Rebecca Crim Essays - Visual Arts, Design, Typography,

Rebecca Crim Response #7 Byrne and Whitte's "A Brave New World: Understanding Deconstructivism" begins by talking about how technology has evolved and has given the designer or typographer endless freedom of what they can create. They then go on to discuss how typography and image interrelate. "For designers, using different layers to create a sort of comparative visual vocabulary in order to present the evolution of a particular idea has become fairly common" The deconstructivist movement as a whole is about uncovering or creating multiple meanings and differences. This reading seems to relate to the others we have done so far in that Byrne and Whitte state that engaging with history is the "source for change." Quite a few of our past readings, such as Purcell's "Art of Psychographics," have stated that design must reference the past in order to relate to the present and relate to the consumer. I have found that throughout this course using history as a point of reference in design really allows for more engaging work. Byrne and Whitte talk about the freedom given to the designers with evolving technology, which relates to the textbook when Drucker and McVarish mention that individualism is an "overriding theme." Designers had many more tools to work with, which opened for more creativity within the work. I believe this article relates to Robert Bringhurst's "The Elements of Typographic Style" In that Bringhurst talks about how chosen type can have a huge impact in a work. The right typeface can convey the idea a designer wants to convey and can influence how a viewer reacts and absorbs the content. "But the very essence of typography-driven design lies in the process of determining the characteristics and arrangement of the type relative to the interpretation or presentation of the text or words in order to enhance communication or expression." Byrne and Whitte touch on how typographic design is related to the deconstructivist movement through its visual rhetoric. In conclusion, I have noticed a lot of overlap throughout the different readings for this course. One in particular topic is that design takes its inspiration from the past. It was interesting to read about that common subject within the context of this reading, which is primarily about how the deconstuctivist movement is a contrast in several elements based off of the context of the work itself. How to Use the NORM.INV Function in Excel

How to Use the NORM.INV Function in Excel Statistical calculations are greatly sped up with the use of software. One way to do these calculations is by using Microsoft Excel. Of the variety of statistics and probability that can be done with this spreadsheet program, we will consider the NORM.INV function. Reason for Use Suppose that we have a normally distributed random variable denoted by x. One question that can be asked is, â€Å"For what value of x do we have the bottom 10% of the distribution?† The steps that we would go through for this type of problem are: Using a standard normal distribution table, find the z score that corresponds to the lowest 10% of the distribution.Use the z-score formula, and solve it for x. This gives us x   ÃŽ ¼ zÏÆ', where  ÃŽ ¼ is the mean of the distribution and  ÃÆ' is the standard deviation.Plug in all of our values into the above formula. This gives us our answer. In Excel the NORM.INV function does all of this for us. Arguments for NORM.INV To use the function, simply type the following into an empty cell: NORM.INV( The arguments for this function, in order, are: Probability – this is the cumulative proportion of the distribution, corresponding to the area in the left-hand side of the distribution.Mean - this was denoted above by ÃŽ ¼, and is the center of our distribution.Standard Deviation - this was denoted above by ÏÆ' and accounts for the spread of our distribution. Simply enter each of these arguments with a comma separating them. After the standard deviation has been entered, close the parentheses with ) and press the enter key. The output in the cell is the value of x that corresponds to our proportion. Example Calculations We will see how to use this function with a few example calculations. For all of these, we will assume that IQ is normally distributed with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. The questions we will answer are: What is the range of values of the lowest 10% of all IQ scores? What is the range of values of the highest 1% of all IQ scores? What is the range of values of the middle 50% of all IQ scores? For question 1 we enter NORM.INV(.1,100,15). The output from Excel is approximately 80.78. This means that scores less than or equal to 80.78 comprise the lowest 10% of all IQ scores. For question 2 we need to think a little before using the function. The NORM.INV function is designed to work with the left portion of our distribution. When we ask about an upper proportion we are looking at the right-hand side. The top 1% is equivalent to asking about the bottom 99%. We enter NORM.INV(.99,100,15). The output from Excel is approximately 134.90. This means that scores greater than or equal to 134.9 comprise the top 1% of all IQ scores. For question 3 we must be even more clever. We realize that the middle 50% is found when we exclude the bottom 25% and the top 25%. For the bottom 25% we enter NORM.INV(.25,100,15) and obtain 89.88.For the top 25% we enter NORM.INV(.75, 100, 15) and obtain 110.12   NORM.S.INV If we are only working with standard normal distributions, then the NORM.S.INV function is slightly faster to use. With this function, the mean is always 0 and the standard deviation is always 1. The only argument is the probability. The connection between the two functions is: NORM.INV(Probability, 0, 1) NORM.S.INV(Probability) For any other normal distributions, we must use the NORM.INV function.

History - Globalization in China Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 5500 words

History - Globalization in China - Essay Example This perception has been disregarded by most Chinese who argue that they have learnt from their country’s long history that isolation often results to backwardness especially considering its vast population (Gerschenkron 842). Among the Chinese, globalization is often viewed as a double- edged sword which brings both challenges and opportunities, as well as advantages and disadvantages. Opportunities and advantages can be achieved in China in the wave of globalization through correct strategies and policies. As a matter of fact, China needs globalization more than any other country of the world considering its vast economic and population size (Huang 65). Since its contribution to the world is immense, its participation in globalization is not a one- way street. The country not only serves as one of the biggest markets for world’s products and services but also as one of the world’s greatest producers of goods and services. It should be noted that even though Chi nese economy integration into the world’s economy has deepened over the years, the issue of globalization in China is considerably controversial (Walter and Howie 107). The transitions and growth of the Chinese economy have been critical in integrating it into the world economy in the wave of globalization. ... Growth in the China context is the realization by the leaders of China after the death of Mao Zedong in 1976 that their country was developing and poor and therefore it was important to deliver sustained jobs and incomes in order to propel their country to success and to grip of world power (Naughton 103-4). Just like other countries that are experiencing globalization, China’s economy and the globalization process is linked to the political issues in the country. The rapid growth of the Chinese economy in the face of globalization and its deepening integration into the global economy can be greatly attributed to the policies that have been implemented by the Chinese government. The government has in the recent past have been setting incentives so as to enable the state firms to profit from the income that they earn on sales from transactions with other â€Å"clients† across the world, as well as their transactions with the state. It is worth noting that, in response to the globalization of the world’s financial system, the government of China has in recent times restructured the country’s banking system among other restructuring that aim at aligning the country’s financial system with the world’s, so as to benefit from globalization processes (Huang 178-9). More importantly, it should be noted that even though China has recorded a remarkable success in the globalization process, there is no general understanding of globalization among the Chinese. Majorly, the understanding of globalization among the Chinese revolves around the following three aspects. One, many of the Chinese elite tends to believe that the globalization trends are inevitable. To them, there is no alternative to globalization and all

Critiquing Business Plan In Emerging Market.Businesses In Brazil Assignment

Critiquing Business Plan In Emerging Market.Businesses In Brazil - Assignment Example There are cases and instances that governments try to come to the aid of some of these entrepreneurs by use of favorable macro and micro economic policies. This notwithstanding, not all of these policies have eliminated the barriers. Interesting, studies have even confirmed that most economic policies put in place by the Brazilian central government also turn round to be barriers for most entrepreneurs seeking to start up new businesses especially those in the oil and gas sector, of which the biodiesel industry is part (Gartner, 1985). In this critique paper for a business plan that is ready for implementation of a biodiesel startup company in Brazil, the various barriers that may possibly exist and methods that can be used to mitigate each of these barriers are outlined. Licensing The licensing of company system that exists in Brazil could serve as a major barrier to both the entry and growth of the new biodiesel company intended for Brazil. This is because there are licensing regul ations, which have been criticized by most economists and market players as being investor hostile. Unfortunately, such hostility exists in cases that the government feels that the coming of certain companies may be a major competition for existing and known state corporations (Ivanova, 2009). A typical example of this is in the area of energy, where even though there is an open market, the state still practices a casual monopoly, trying to prevent private participation. As part of the casual monopoly strategy, private individuals are made to undergo several routine processes in getting license to operate (Krasniqi, 2007). Meanwhile, the possession of a license to make the commencement of business in Brazil is very important as it opens the avenue for such companies to benefit and enjoy trade incentives that may exist. What is more, in order to have an international reputation and open one’s business up for international investment and other forms of business expansion option s such as enlistment on the Brazilian Stock Exchange, license registration is demanded. A method to overcome this barrier would be to first enter the market as a partner to an existing registered local company. This way, the company will not be given the kind of hostile treatment given to expatriate companies. After some time when there is a separation in the ownership of the company, the license of the original company will over both separated companies if there was ownership up to a certain number of years. Lending and Credit bias in favor of multinationals Access to money for entrepreneurs remains a major barrier to growth for most new entrants in Brazil. This is because there is a form of lending and credit bias that favors existing and well established international and multinational companies as against new entrants and small and medium scale businesses in Brazil (Foley, 2003). Commonly, the financial institutions, most of which are banks try to justify some of these biases by explaining that new entrants and small and medium scale companies lack credit credibility. What this means is that they are not tried and tested in their finances such that they can be trusted with huge sums of credit. In most cases therefore, there is a limitation on the amount of money that can borrowed by these new entrants. Where there are no limitations on the quantum of money that can be borrowed, there are strict lending processes that delay

Southern Racial Inequality in Faulkner’s Go Down, Moses Essay -- Faulk

Southern Racial Inequality in Faulkner’s Go Down, Moses All the stories in Go Down, Moses had a common thread: the McCaslin family. One story, however, stood out from the rest for lacking a McCaslin main character. This story was, of course, â€Å"Pantaloon in Black.† At first, I thought this story of grief was almost a beautiful love story. When Rider lost his wife and first love, he was so grief-stricken he didn’t even care to live. However, the conclusion on the story took any beauty out of this tragedy. The matter-of-fact way the deputy tells his wife the story, and the even more apathetic way that she accepts/ignores it, was Faulkner’s way of reminding us of the racial inequality in the South. Waiting until the end of the story to throw at the reader the key to the story is typical of Faulkner. We saw him waiting to shock us at the end of Sanctuary with the circumstances of Popeye’s life. He waited until near the end of Absalom, Absalom! to put together all the pieces of that puzzle. While the reader didn’t find out any shocking news at the end of â€Å"Pantaloon in Black,† we were...
